Why is in-depth Privacy Act training NOT mandatory for FOIA Officers!?️

Research has indicated that there is no single federal mandate requiring every FOIA Officer to complete a specific “in-depth” Privacy Act training course. hmm

Throughout my career, I came across several FOIA Officers who have no idea what Privacy Act exemptions are, and how to process a Privacy Act request.

I believe this is absolutely absurd !!️

While I understand that some FOIA Officers do not handle Privacy Act requests on a regular basis, training should still be provided because as we know, every FOIA case is different. With the right knowledge FOIA Officers can provide the public with the most accurate information while properly protecting the nation's interests.

How can FOIA Officers make the most accurate decisions, without proper and complete knowledge? ‍♀️

  • ️ In-depth Privacy Act training should be mandatory for all FOIA Officers.
